Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program

The Housing Choice Voucher Program, commonly referred to as "Section 8", enables low-income families in Waukesha County, Wisconsin to rent safe housing that is affordable in the private market through funds provided by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.  By enrolling in the program you will receive a voucher that allows a portion of your rent to be paid directly to a property manager or a property owner by the Waukesha Housing Authority.




The Waukesha Housing Authority provides rental assistance to approximately 1050 families in Waukesha under the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program

What is the Process?

Names are selected from the waiting list based on preferences and date of application.  Once selected the following steps summarize the process to become a Housing Choice Voucher family:




  • Apply Online
  • Waukesha Housing Authority selects applicants from the waiting list and mails a letter to start the intake process
  • Family returns requested forms and documentation
  • Waukesha Housing Authority verifies information received
  • Family attends voucher briefing and gets voucher
  • Family uses voucher by turning in a filled out Request for Tenancy form
  • Family awaits rent decision
  • Family awaits inspection results
  • Family signs the lease
  • Family moves in, pays rent and utilities
  • Family complies with HUD and Waukesha Housing Authority rules and regulations
